Miso Butter Sweet Potatoes (The Japanese Sercret You Need To Try)

Hi, my name is Erika.A few years ago, while walking the streets of London in the bustling crowd of Oxford Street, I stumbled upon a tiny, hidden Japanese restaurant. It was there that I first tasted Miso Sweet Potato, and the flavor immediately captivated me. I spent a long time experimenting in my kitchen to recreate that experience, until an elderly Japanese lady shared the real Japanese Secret with me. Now, I am sharing it with you.

Ingredients with the Japanese Secret:

• 3-4 medium sweet potatoes (size is key for even baking)

• 125g Butter (divided into 8 portions; I recommend garlic butter)

• 2 tbsp Brown Sugar (The core of the secret)

• For the Miso Cream:

• 1 tbsp Brown Miso Paste

• 100g Softened Butter

• 3 cloves of Garlic, crushed (or garlic powder to taste)

• Sriracha sauce (to taste)

• For Serving: 2 stalks of spring onions and toasted sesame seeds

How to Make Perfect Miso Sweet Potato

Wash the potatoes thoroughly, cut them in half lengthwise, and pat them completely dry.

The Secret: Line your baking tray with parchment paper. Spread 2 tablespoons of brown sugar over the spots where the potatoes will be placed. Put a small cube of butter (approx. 12g) onto the sugar for every potato half. Place the potatoes cut-side down directly onto the butter and sugar.

Baking: Place them in a preheated oven at 200°C and bake on low heat for 35-40 minutes. Do not flip them! This allows the sugar and butter to create a perfect, glass-like caramel layer.

The Miso Butter: While the potatoes bake, mix the softened butter with the miso paste, crushed garlic, and Sriracha. Blend until perfectly silky.

The Final Touch: Once baked, let them cool for a minute, then flip them over. While still steaming hot, generously spread the miso cream on top so it can melt deep into the potato.

Expert Tips & Variations

Top with freshly chopped spring onions and toasted sesame seeds. For a complete meal, I highly recommend adding fried tofu with tahini sauce, though this dish is a vegetarian masterpiece all on its own.
